Balance, Stability and Proprioception: Rocker Boards
Balance and stability are important for everyday movement, mobility and confidence, particularly as we get older.
One of the key systems involved in balance is proprioception. Proprioception is the body’s ability to sense where a joint is positioned and how it is moving without needing to look at it.
After an injury, especially an ankle sprain, proprioception can become less effective. This may make the ankle feel unstable or less controlled during walking, running or changes of direction. We use rocker boards to help with this rehabilitation.
Reduced proprioception can increase the risk of:
- Rolling or spraining the ankle again
- Losing balance
- Falls
- Reduced confidence with walking or exercise
For this reason, balance and stability exercises are often an important part of rehabilitation after an ankle injury. Improving proprioception, strength and joint control can help support safer movement and reduce the risk of future injury.
As we age, maintaining good balance becomes even more important. Regular exercises that challenge balance, coordination and lower-limb strength can help support mobility, independence and fall prevention.
Rocker boards are a great way at improving proprioception and control.
Research from the Czech republic shows that if we spend 5 minutes, 3 times per day for 6 weeks, we can double our proprioception.
An easy test to assess at home. In a safe place, stand on one leg, lift the other leg so that the hip is at 90 degrees, knee directly out in front. With the eyes open, we should be able to stand comfortably on one leg for 30 seconds. With the eyes closed we should be able to stand for 10 seconds.
We have not been able to get wobble boards for some time. However, we have found a new supplier and are able to sell these again at the low price of $60 per board.
