National Diabetes Week

Given that it’s National Diabetes week, Institute of Sports and Spines wanted to shed some light on the benefits of Exercise for  Type II Diabetes.

  • Increases insulin sensitivity and function to help improve diabetes management
  • Reduces risk of cardiovascular disease risk
  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Helps maintain a healthy weight range
  • Reduces stress and inflammation

Exercise also significantly reduces your risk of developing type II Diabetes.

Here are the current recommendations for diabetics from Exercise Sports Science Australia:

  • People with diabetes should accumulate at least 210 min per week of moderate-intensity exercise or 125 min per week of vigorous intensity exercise.
  • No more than two consecutive days without training – to maintain insulin sensitivity.
  • Vigorous intensity exercise is more time efficient and may also result in greater benefits in appropriate individuals with consideration of complications and contraindications.
  • 2 or more resistance training sessions per week should be included in the total 210 or 125 min of moderate or vigorous exercise.
These recommendations are more specific than the physical activity guidelines for the general population. This is because of the fantastic impact exercise has on better managing blood glucose levels.

Remember to keep moving everyone!!
