We all know how it goes: your physiotherapist gives you a set of exercises, you feel motivated, and then life gets busy. Before long, those physio exercises are forgotten.
The truth is, sticking to your physiotherapy exercises is not about having more willpower. It is about making them simple, realistic, and easy to fit into your day. Here is how I help my patients stay consistent with their rehab exercises and get better results.
1. Choose Three Exercises
As a physio, I rarely prescribe more than three exercises at a time.
Why? Because too many exercises can feel overwhelming. When you have a long list, it becomes easier to avoid all of them. Keeping your program short and focused makes it much more likely that you will actually follow through.
If your plan feels too long, focus on the three exercises that seem most important or the ones you are most likely to do consistently. Doing a few key exercises regularly is far more effective than doing ten exercises occasionally.
2. Attach Your Exercises to a Daily Habit
One of the easiest ways to make physio exercises part of your routine is to connect them to something you already do every day.
For example:
-
After brushing your teeth, do your stretches
-
Before walking the dog, do your strengthening exercises
-
While waiting for the kettle to boil, complete a quick mobility drill
When you link your exercises to an existing habit, they become easier to remember and easier to repeat. Over time, this helps turn your rehab routine into an automatic part of your day.
3. Notice the Small Wins
Progress is not always dramatic at first, but small improvements matter.
Pay attention to how your body feels after doing your exercises. Maybe you notice less stiffness in the morning, a little more strength, or simply the satisfaction of completing your routine. These small wins build momentum and help reinforce the habit.
The more you notice progress, the easier it becomes to stay motivated.
Keep It Simple and Stay Consistent
The best exercise program is the one you will actually do.
If you want to stick to your physio exercises, keep things simple, focus on what matters most, and anchor your exercises to habits you already have. Choose your three exercises, do them consistently, and let the results build over time.
