Your first consultation at Institute of Sports and Spines will include a complete history of the complaint and your general health. A comprehensive physical examination will follow which may include; postural analysis, functional and orthopaedic tests, movement patterns and exercises.
Once a diagnosis and prognosis has been reached, treatment options will be discussed. Your visit to our clinic is about choices. We want you to be actively involved in achieving your goals.
Treatment will then follow which may include a wide range of chiropractic and ancillary techniques. Sometimes outcome assessment questionnaires will be used to help us gauge your progress.
If you haven’t seen a Chiropractor here before, it would be appreciated that you arrive ten minutes prior to your appointment to fill in a new patient form.
Follow-up appointments with your chiropractor include discussion on progress since the previous appointment and reassessment of problematic movements or positions before treatment continues.
After the Appointment
The Chiropractors at Institute of Sports and Spines are here to assist in complete recovery from your musculo-skeletal condition. We believe that your care continues after you have left your appointment – you are a valued patient and will continue to be nurtured back to full health. This is why follow up appointments are sometimes recommended – so that the job isn’t left half-done!
As a patient of Institute of Sports and Spines’ Chiropractic Department, you are invited to phone and speak directly with your practitioner concerning exacerbations of pain, difficulty with exercises and any other treatment-related questions you may have. If the Chiropractor is unable to attend your call, all efforts will be made to contact you as soon as possible.
When you first attend our clinic for treatment you will be asked to fill out a detailed form about your general health and the history of the complaint that you would like treated. It is important that you fill out the whole form even if you feel the questions don't relate specifically to the condition you would like worked on.
Your pulse will be taken and your therapist may need to perform some abdominal palpation to obtain further details about the state of the body. Sports medicine assessment techniques will now be utilized if you are attending the clinic for a musculoskeletal complaint.
Acupuncture needles are extremely fine with 35-40 needles being able to fit inside a traditional hypodermic needle. All that most people feel is a slight prick felt with the insertion of the needle which may be followed by a slightly achy pressure spreading out from the point. Acupuncture is very calming and regulating to the nervous system and during the 15-20 minutes whilst the needles are retained it is not uncommon for patients to doze off or fall asleep. You should however allow 40-50minutes for a treatment.
Treatment schedules are always up to our patients but the ideal plan is as follows. While some patients have incredible results in only 1-2 treatments it is more common to require a course of treatment.
Chronic injuries or less debilitating pain start with weekly treatments and quickly move to longer periods in between visits.
Internal conditions such as menstrual pain or irregularities, menopausal complaints, digestive problems, stress or anxiety usually require a weekly treatment schedule for the first month followed by treatment every 2-6 weeks depending on the patient and their lifestyle. Internal complaints are usually combined with Classical Chinese herbal remedies to prolong and deepen treatment effects.
If you have any questions about your treatment please dont'hesitate to ask your acupuncturist.
Prior to your treatment our massage therapists will talk through your problem areas and discuss how long you have been affected. They will ask you a few general questions regarding your current condition and your health history and they will look, and listen, for clues in order to provide an effective treatment plan, which seeks to treat the original biomechanical dysfunction, to aid in healing the cause of the disorder, as well as the symptoms.
This is your opportunity to inform the therapist of your expectations or of any specific requirements you may have. You are also encouraged to ask questions in relation to your condition or the treatment during this time.
The massage therapists at this centre are highly trained and have an excellent understanding of anatomy and physiology. They will adapt the techniques they use to best address your individual needs. You may have an injury or painful point that needs work; however, your therapist may asses that you need work on other areas in order to achieve the most effective outcome for your individual complaint or injury. Remedial massage aims to correct restore balance.
The techniques may be gentle or firm, deep or shallow, depending on what the condition requires. Please communicate with your therapist if you feel that the pressure applied is too firm or too light or if you start feeling cold etc.
Sometimes massage can cause slight discomfort if you have tender or tense muscles. You may also feel a little tenderness a day or so later. To ease these symptoms it is also advised that you keep up your water intake.
